Fishing agreements

International Collective in Support of Fishworkers

The two parties intend to develop cooperation in agriculture and fishery.

There are three types of fishing agreements (FAs).

FAO is also working with some 1,700 fishermen to improve fishing and fish processing techniques.

Canada organized the Conference on the Governance of High Seas Fisheries and the United Nations Fish Agreement in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, in May 2005.

This regional approach is in accordance with the draft fisheries resolution, which encourages States, through their participation in regional fisheries management organizations, to initiate processes for their performance review.

According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Fisheries Report issued in 2004, the two main types of fisheries in the Territory are small scale (commercial) and recreational fisheries.

(d) Information and cooperation system on fish products trade in Africa

198. The Japan Fisheries Association reported that Japanese tuna fishing vessels operating in the CCSBT Convention area could obtain the authorization to do so from the competent authorities provided that they avoided incidental catch of seabirds in accordance with Japan s Fisheries Act and the regulations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

206. FAO reported that, at the twenty second session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI), it had been proposed that FAO, in collaboration with Japan and the United States, organize consultations of experts from inside and outside Governments to develop and propose guidelines leading to a plan of action aimed at reducing incidental seabird catches.

Union of National Unity of Workers in Aquaculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food.

Some suggested involving the industry and fishers, including those involved in small scale fisheries, in decision making processes.

Several delegations highlighted the difficulties experienced by small scale fishers in gaining access to high seas fishing grounds.

Its signing and entry into force have had a significant impact on the conservation and management of fishing resources on the high seas and also on international cooperation in the fishing industry.

The United Kingdom is disappointed that this matter is affecting the level of Argentine cooperation on the conservation of fisheries resources under the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission, which is in the mutual interests of all parties.

This year's draft resolution on fisheries continues to lay the foundation for the review conference mandated by the 1995 United Nations Fish Stocks Agreement.

Such support is already included, for example, in bilateral agreements on access to fishery resources and in some multilateral environmental agreements.

The third type is partnerships that integrate fisheries trade and development. The case of the Comoros is illustrative of this type.

The integrated fisheries management framework, including fishery plans, has been further developed.

Encourages the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Committee on Fisheries to consider the issue of derelict fishing gear and related marine debris at its next meeting in 2007, and in particular the implementation of relevant provisions of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries

The use of better technology is helping to increase the catch, and a fisheries credit scheme assists fishermen in financing the purchase of boats.

The third panellist, Lori Ridgeway, Director General, International Coordination and Policy Analysis, Fisheries and Oceans, Canada, presented a summary of the results of the Conference on the Governance of High Seas Fisheries and the United Nations Fish Agreement Moving from Words to Action, held in St. John's, Canada, from 1 to 5 May 2005.

It was unfortunate that the European Union had expressed an intention of signing an illegal fisheries agreement with Morocco.

Sebastian Mathew, Programme Adviser, International Collective in Support of Fishworkers, Chennai, India, focused, inter alia, on the role of fisheries, including aquaculture, as a major source of employment.

In the Republic of Korea, in the late 1980s, the Fisheries Cooperative Law was amended to pave the way for members of the fisheries cooperatives to directly elect their presidents and for the elected presidents to directly elect the chairman and president of the National Federation.

The second panel segment, on commercial large scale fishing, was launched by Patrick McGuiness, President of the International Coalition of Fisheries Association, and Javier Garat, Secretary General, Federación Española de Organizaciones Pesqueras, Spain, who provided an industry perspective.

The CARICOM Regional Fisheries Mechanism, which was recently formed, has already begun to make a positive contribution to the collaborative effort to improve capacity in fisheries management in the region.

FAO offers guidance on the development of legal frameworks for more effective fisheries management and support for cooperation among fisheries and maritime control agencies.

However, almost all contents of the Agreement such as the system for permission or approval of fishing vessel operations on the high seas, the marking of such vessels, the obligation to keep records of fishing vessels and approval by the Minister of International Trade and Industry with regard to export of fishing vessels had been implemented by existing national laws, such as the Fisheries Law, the Fishing Boat Law, the Export Trade Control Order and other regulations under the Fisheries Law.

Welcoming the Rome Declaration on the Implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries adopted by the Ministerial Meeting on Fisheries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in March 1999,

In this connection, the Agency had provided funding to FFA and to the South Pacific Commission for the assistance of a fisheries management adviser and a women s fisheries development officer respectively.

Inter firm relations may be established through the market, cooperative agreements, trade associations, etc. (Best, 1990).

(e) Also in June, UNU and the Government of Iceland signed an agreement to open the UNU Fisheries Training Programme at the Marine Research Institute in Reykjavik.

Leaders again called on Distant Water Fishing Nations operating in the region to support the vessel monitoring system initiative of FFA member countries.
