Other initiatives in the field of health

I am pleased to report that we are making progress in some areas, especially in the areas of education and of the environment.

Article 18 of the said Law calls for the adoption of the National Strategy for the Protection of the Environment which is still in the process of drafting by the State Division for the Protection of the Environment, the governmental body with the main competence in this field.

The interim Government's programme emphasized good governance, poverty reduction and environmental protection, all priority areas of the Brussels Programme of Action.

Additional areas of environmental management to be supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) will also be identified.

Traditional areas of NGO involvement include child health, nutrition and development, basic education and water and environmental sanitation.

UNEP has been assisting the Environment Protection Authority in Yemen and the Regional Organization for the Protection of Marine Environment in developing their frameworks for environmental information system.

The Government's capacity to deliver services to the population, particularly in the areas of education, health and sanitation, needs sustained attention.

It is making progress in areas such as tolerance, the fight against human trafficking, freedom in the media, and environmental security and safety.

There are already a number of mechanisms collecting and disseminating information in the broad field of international cooperation for development and environment protection.
