In 1996, UNDCP initiated a subregional project to reduce drug abuse in the highlands of east Asia. The project targets certain highland regions for community based demand reduction and social development activities.

The second project was a compendium of community programmes for older persons in newly ageing countries, which lists operational projects at the community level.

UNDCP experts participated in a drug control conference organized jointly by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Commission at Gaborone in February 1998.
