Combustion of fossil and biomass fuels produces a number of different airborne pollutants that have impacts at different spatial scales.

A further proposal is the passivation of spent rocket stages and space objects remaining in orbit, i.e. the freeing from tanks and balloons on rocket stages and space objects of propellant components and gases which could cause the explosion of the tank (or balloon) and break up of the object even after a considerable period of time has elapsed.

Air pollution1 results primarily from the combustion of fossil fuels in transportation and power generation, from various industrial emissions and from large scale biomass burning in some parts of the world.

Leaded fuel was also being phased out and research was being conducted on the possibilities of introducing a comprehensive clear air act.

With respect to aviation and marine bunker fuels, each Party included in Annex I shall, in pursuit of Article 2, paragraph 2, of the Kyoto Protocol, identify the steps it has taken to promote and or implement any decisions by the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Maritime Organization in order to limit or reduce emissions of greenhouse gases not controlled by the Montreal Protocol from aviation and marine bunker fuels.

Given the dominance of fossil fuel combustion in today's energy system, many problems manifest themselves through emissions to the atmosphere and different forms of air pollution.

About half of the Parties considered switching to cleaner fuels, such as low sulphur fuels and LPG, from coal.

(c) Provision of 144,400 is made for aviation fuel based on 100 flight hours per month at a fuel usage of 750 litres per hour at a fuel cost of 0.77 per litre.
