The Chair of the SBI noted that the first session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP MOP 1) would be held in 2005 in conjunction with the eleventh session of the Conference of the Parties (COP).

Background Article 13, paragraph 6, of the Kyoto Protocol provides that, following COP MOP 1 Subsequent ordinary sessions of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to this Protocol shall be held every year and in conjunction with ordinary sessions of the Conference of the Parties, unless otherwise decided by the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to this Protocol .

The meetings of the subsidiary bodies will also be organized so that similar or related agenda items relating to both the Convention and the Protocol will be dealt with in proximity, or jointly if Parties so decide. Joint meetings of the COP and COP MOP would be convened during the high level segment.
