That will constitute the most important tribute to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and honour the Remembrance Day.

Holocaust remembrance draft resolution (A 60L.12)

We believe that proclaiming 27 January as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust is a good way to ensure that the Holocaust's dreadful lessons are not forgotten.

It seeks to give expression to the commitment to Holocaust remembrance and education within the United Nations system.

It has been decided to designate 9 October as National Holocaust Commemoration Day.

The first challenge is to ensure that the Holocaust victims are properly commemorated.

This year, we observed Holocaust Day for the second time in Romania.

Denmark is a member of the Task Force for Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research.

But it commands a place of special significance in European remembrance.

In that context, I welcome the inscription of this new agenda item entitled Holocaust remembrance .

These include, besides the seminars and workshops, organizing commemorative activities, such as the commemoration of the Rwanda genocide and human rights day.

We fully share and understand the feelings of the sponsors with regard to the need for Holocaust remembrance.

On 1 November 2005, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on Holocaust remembrance (resolution 60 7), in which, among other items, it rejects any denial of the Holocaust as an historical event, either in full or in part .

The Chinese delegation is in favour of adding the item entitled Holocaust remembrance to the agenda of the current session of the General Assembly and of adopting a draft resolution bearing the same title.

In every country, the memory of the Holocaust must be preserved as a commitment to spare future generations such horror.

We also support the draft resolution's request for the Secretary General to establish a programme of outreach on the Holocaust and the United Nations and to mobilize civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education.

We welcome the proposed draft resolution as a gesture commemorating the victims of the Holocaust.

In 1976, I was asked to design a children's memorial museum in a Holocaust museum in Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, which you see here the campus.

That is why the European Union supports a United Nations resolution to establish an annual day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

In particular, Canada applauds Israel and its Permanent Representative for achieving consensus on the resolution entitled Holocaust remembrance .

The Government of Ukraine supports the initiative of the Jewish community to create a Ukrainian Museum of the Holocaust in Kiev.

In its final operative paragraph the draft resolution requests the Secretary General to establish a programme of outreach entitled The Holocaust and the United Nations , as well as measures to mobilize civil society for Holocaust remembrance and education.

The moral consciousness of the world demands that this massacre be adequately accounted for as an act of genocide and that its victims be remembered just as those of Baby Yar, Khatyn and Srebrenica.

The Task Force for International Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, to which many European Union member States belong, is a particularly effective way of ensuring high standards in the way we teach about the Holocaust in our schools, universities and communities.

At that session, Member States affirmed the important role and responsibility of the United Nations in Holocaust remembrance and education to honour the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and to stand watch against the re emergence of such evil, for the benefit of future generations.

Yet the anniversary passed almost unnoticed. The massacre of some 500,000 members or sympathizers of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) during 1965 1966 is the least talked about genocide of the last century.

So, my delegation welcomes the draft resolution on Holocaust remembrance and congratulates all those that sponsored it.

The special session to commemorate the Holocaust is only one example, of the welcome shift in the attitude of this institution towards Israel.

In early July, my first duty in the presidency of the European Union was to go to Srebrenica to mark the tenth anniversary of the massacre there, the worst in Europe since the end of the Second World War.

It builds on the commitment that European Union member States and many others made in 2000 at the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust, which commemorated the victims and honoured those who stood against it.

The International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust should serve to make us aware of what we lost and what was destroyed.
