Most U.S. families had both financial assets and real estate assets. These assets, worth 2,319,386, bring the total of assets frozen in the 32 States that have reported taking action to close to 91 million (at June 2005 exchange rates), excluding the assets frozen in five States that did not specify amounts.

5. The assets of the General Fund amounted to 636,930.

This tragically small sum amounts to just three cents for every 100 of US gross national product, which is less than two days of US military spending.

The historical cost of assets recorded in the Minder Tracking System as at 31 December 1997 was 234,247,451 and the depreciated value was 82,380,160.

The biggest contributor to that performance was United States investments, which comprise the majority of the Fund apos s real estate portfolio.

Indeed, we should expect an even sharper reduction in US energy output as persistently low prices increase the pressure on domestic producers. From the shutdown of additional rigs to the curtailment of new investment in exploiting shale resources, the US will likely experience a fall in its absolute energy production, as well as in its share of world output.

If global savers and investors expect the dollar s depreciation to continue, they will flee the currency unless they are compensated appropriately for keeping their money in the US and its assets, implying that the gap between US and foreign interest rates will widen. As a result, the cost of capital in the US will soar, discouraging investment and reducing consumption spending as high interest rates depress the value of households principal assets their houses.

The depreciated value of the greeting card and related operations capital assets is 1,164,000.

The budget allocation for 2005 regarding asset management is 35,000.

Second, China s foreign assets are denominated almost exclusively in US dollars, while its foreign liabilities are denominated mostly in renminbi. As a result, whenever the US dollar declines, China s net international investment position (the difference between its external financial assets and liabilities) deteriorates and so does its investment income balance.

Interest income is estimated at 4,680,000 for the biennium 1998 1999, 2,288,000 being generated from general purpose funds and 2,392,000 from special purpose funds, compared with estimates amounting to 7,106,000 for the biennium 1996 1997, including 3,608,000 from general purpose funds and 3,498,000 from special purpose funds.

The US must carry out fundamental reforms of its financial system to plug the equity leaks and recover investors confidence. But even then it will have a hard time continuing to sell financial assets to the rest of the world.

While China s government should make greater efforts to rebalance the economy by conventional measures, it also should focus more attention on adjusting the currency structure of the country s gross assets and gross liabilities. In particular, China should try to replace its dollar denominated assets with renminbi denominated assets, and its renminbi denominated liabilities with dollar denominated liabilities.

America s Houses of Cards

The assets disposed of in the Mission area amounted to 3.7 million.

Yet in Latin America, with a population of nearly 400 million, investment stands at 0.58 per cent of GDP.

After all, they (or some of them) argue, the real GDP of the United States is growing by 400 billion per year, with about 270 billion going to labor and 130 billion to capital. Even after depreciation, that 130 billion of extra annual income is capitalized at about 1.5 trillion of wealth, so the current account deficit, even at 1 trillion, is not overwhelmingly large.

Without a clearinghouse, BofA has a 100 million asset (the 100 million that Bear owes it) and owes 200 million. Having only 100 million (if these obligations are its only assets and liabilities), BofA would have to pay AIG and Citibank 50 million each.

As detailed in annex I.B, group I comprises 83 per cent of all assets and has an inventory value of 32.0 million.

America, China, and the Productivity Paradox

Group III, shown in annex I.D, includes assets valued at 0.5 million (1 per cent of the ONUMOZ total asset value), which were sold to commercial entities in Mozambique and to the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (RENAMO).

The low interest rate on long term Treasury bonds has also boosted demand for other long term assets that promise higher yields, including equities, farm land, high yield corporate bonds, gold, and real estate. When interest rates rise, the prices of those assets will fall as well.

In 2004, total international cooperation provided to Guatemala was only 290.2 million (equivalent to 1.1 per cent of GDP).

Similarly, the quantitative easing (QE) that has defined many major central banks monetary policy in recent years does not involve buying or selling foreign assets. Under QE, the Federal Reserve buys and announces that it will buy assets the only difference is that these assets are longer maturity US government debt instruments and mortgage backed securities of various kinds, all denominated in US dollars.
