LONDON China s stock market has plunged yet again, this time by 8.5 the market s second largest fall in a single day, and the largest since the global financial crisis. The roller coaster ride is far from over.

Facebook shares fell 2.6 on Friday, dragging down the major Wall Street indexes.

Seen from industry, the gains of stocks such as electrical industry, natural gas industry, aquaculture, and agriculture and forestry in the Tokyo stock market were at the very top, while stocks like banking obviously declined.

And how about stock market declines that are accompanied by a steep and persistent collapse in earnings by depressions?

As for the stock market widely viewed as a kind of casino for a small fraction of Chinese households only about 6 of China s population own shares. The Shanghai stock market index soared from 2,200 a year ago to a peak of 5,100 in mid summer and then dropped sharply, to about 3,000 now.

As the stock market dives, they receive margin calls and are being forced to sell their shares at ever lower prices, causing the stock market s downward spiral to accelerate. In Soviet fashion, the Moscow stock exchanges closed for four days in a row in the week of September 15, because stocks plunged too fast.

Likewise, the world s largest nuclear builder the French state controlled company AREVA lost up to 88 of its share value between 2008 and 2012. Not surprisingly, investors have welcomed new strategic plans by both companies, as well as EDF s withdrawal from the US market the downward pressure on their share prices has eased, though for how long remains to be seen.

And when they went IPO, their stock was at about 30 or 40 dollars and then plummeted, and it's never traded above 10.

The U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the US against six major currencies, ended the day down 0.10 , falling to 96.479 at the closing session.

The February 27 drop in US stock prices was only the 31st biggest one day drop since 1950. But all of the other 30 drops occurred at times when stock prices were much more volatile.

Since then, China s stock market has been a global laggard that is, until the past year, when it became the best performing in the world, rising by more than 150 . And yet the roller coaster pattern continues the 8.5 plunge came when the market re opened on a Monday that followed the largest two day rise since 2008.

We also had the long slide from 1977 1982 that followed a 40 collapse from 1973 1975. Before that, we had declines in 1946 1949, 1937 1942, and the biggest of them all in 1929 1933.

As long as China continues to pursue pro market reforms, it will remain the largest single country contributor to global GDP growth over the medium term unperturbed by stock market volatility. If reforms stall, falling stock prices are likely to be the least of China s worries.

The US government has been particularly aggressive in supporting the stock market since the peak of the equities price bubble in 2000, most notably cutting interest rates repeatedly. Of course, this was publicly justified in terms of stimulating the economy, not supporting the stock market.

Indeed, the Wall Street Journal ran a story about it on the morning of the 1987 crash. I know that those images contributed to the severity of the 1987 crash by encouraging people to sell, because I ran a survey of individual and institutional investors the following week.

Yet the Chinese government has remained committed to intervention, responding to the correction with heavy handed, politically motivated measures, including the complete suspension of trade of many companies stocks. The move seemed to have halted the further deterioration of the Shanghai stock market.

While Chinese equities initially bounced 14 off their July 8 low, the 8.5 plunge on July 27 suggests that that may have been a temporary respite. The likelihood of forced deleveraging of margin calls underscores the potential for a further slide once full trading resumes.

People still talk about October 28, 1929, or October 19, 1987. Big drops get their attention, and this primes some people to be attentive for them in the future, and to be ready to sell if another one comes.

In the afternoon trading session, two major Tokyo stock indexes extended their gains, driven by a weaker yen and generally rising of other major indexes in Asia.

It was extremely important to be selective in making investments but also not to overreact when markets fell, as it was often difficult to judge the right moment to re enter markets to benefit from the ensuing recovery in share prices.
