The law prohibits child adoption, which is replaced by the system of caring for foundlings in accordance with the Foundling Care Act No. 107 of 1970.

The Law on labor allows for a father of the child to use the right to maternity leave in case of the child's mother's death, in case the mother abandons the child, or if she is prevented from exercising this right due to valid reasons.

It was also necessary to address the issue of abandoned children, by registering them and ensuring that they were reunited with their families or taken into care by their local communities.

New legislation had been enacted to protect children both within the family and within State institutions which cared for orphans and abandoned children and to protect children from all forms of exploitation, including the prohibition against persons under 18 from participating in camel races.

Suitable alternative families are found to adopt these children. Only children with disabilities remain in the institutions.

(c) Providing resources for battered women and children in our communities

131. It is the opinion of the Committee that further measures should be taken by the State party to promote the possibilities for children, particularly those who have been abandoned, to grow up in a home like environment through, inter alia, fostering and adoption.

Eliminating the demand is an often forgotten facet of child protection.

It is concerned that abandonment, child labour, sexual exploitation and abuse, physical ill treatment and familial violence continue to occur, and calls for a specific policy for children to be developed to address these issues.
