This cross group proposal for a CD programme of work has received the widest support any proposal for a CD work programme has ever reached so far.

Cuba supports the adoption of a balanced programme of work which would take into account the priorities and interests of all member States of the Conference on Disarmament, including the setting up of an ad hoc committee for nuclear disarmament, which is the first priority for our country.

UNIDIR is planning a large number of publications over the coming 18 months. They include the quarterly journal, Disarmament Forum, and books and research reports.

This should be reflected within the context of the programme of work of the Conference on Disarmament as the sole multilateral negotiating forum dealing with questions of disarmament.

Both areas are desirable candidates for preservation.

It is important that the Conference agree on a programme of work as soon as possible during this second session.

In that connection, her delegation welcomed the planned reduction of UNDP headquarters staff.

29. The Board commended the plans to structure the Department into five branches dealing with weapons of mass destruction conventional arms regional disarmament monitoring, database and information and the Geneva disarmament branch.
