There are 143 women members of the four provincial assemblies.

The percentage of reserved seats in the Senate, the National Assembly and the provincial assemblies is approximately 17 .

The strength of the National Assembly has been increased to 342 with 60 reserved seats for women.

The Legislative Level As a result of general elections held in October 2002, 73 women have been elected as members of the National Assembly 60 on reserved seats and 14 on general seats, 18 women as Senators 17 on reserved seats for women and one as a technocrat and 143 as members of the various provincial assemblies 128 on reserved seats and 15 on general seats.

Is this freedom of speech?

It is in this context that 19 seats were elected at the last meeting instead of 18 seats.

The cumulative strength of all provincial assemblies is 728 of which 128 seats are reserved for women.

In view of the limited seating at the Council table, the first five speakers of regional organizations are seated at the table.

Thirty three percent seats were reserved for women in the local bodies elections and 17 percent in the National Assembly, the provincial assemblies and the Senate.

At its 3rd plenary meeting, on 10 July, on the proposal of the President, the Conference of the Parties elected by acclamation seven Vice Presidents and the Rapporteur of the Conference.

After a process of co optation in order to conform to ethnic and gender balances, in accordance with article 129 of the electoral code, the composition of the National Assembly is 64 seats for CNDD FDD, 30 for FRODEBU, 15 for UPRONA and 9 for other parties including 3 seats for the Batwa 30 per cent of the 118 members of the National Assembly are women.

A number of observers from Governments, intergovernmental organizations and non governmental organizations also attended.

The Temporary Chairman invited the Committee to consider the nominations for the posts of Chairman, Vice Chairmen and Rapporteur of the Committee.

The Bureau envisaged, however, that each Chairperson could exercise discretion in granting access.

The Division for the Advancement of Women and OHCHR will continue to support the participation of the Chairperson of the Commission on the Status of Women and of the President of the Human Rights Council in each other's sessions and the participation of the Chairperson of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women in the sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Forty eight Assembly seats are allocated as compensatory seats for minority groups that are unable to meet the electoral quota.
