Regarding country visits, the Special Rapporteur recalls that in the first half of 2005, he undertook visits to Georgia, including the territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, in February and to Mongolia in June.

The mission's visit and activities were widely reported by the media.

During his visit in July, the independent expert visited the prison of Gitega, focusing on the issue of political prisoners.

CTED visited Kenya in May, and both Albania and Thailand in June.

In addition to staying in Port au Prince, the mission visited the cities of Gonaïves and Cap Haïtien.

The Ambassador of Burundi has visited BWA headquarters, as has the Governor of Huambo in Angola.

It briefed them on its visits to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Burundi.

The visit was in follow up to a preparatory mission of five days carried out in July 1996 by Mr. Joinet, the former Chairman of the Group, during which he met with officials, visited a prison in Beijing and a re education through labour centre in Shandung province and agreed upon modalities for a future visit by the Working Group (see E CN.4 1997 4, paras. 23 35).

In 2003, 22 189 young people visited the youth counselling centres (including 82 young people without health insurance), 17 of the visits were by first time visitors.

The Special Representative visited three provinces.

United Nations high dignitaries visited Myanmar during 2005 and those visits have further promoted Myanmar's cooperation with the United Nations.

The independent expert visited the Sudan from 19 to 29 August and Nairobi on 30 and 31 August 2004.

The independent expert visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the first time from 22 August to 2 September 2004, when he went to Kinshasa and Kisangani, in Orientale province.

He visited Gaza, where he had the opportunity to visit the Karni crossing and to view the destruction caused to Gaza International Airport.

(d) International Alert led a tour of South Africa for politicians of Burundi from 17 to 24 September 1995.

That subcommittee has made three visits, the first in March 2005 to Morocco and Mali, the second to Sudan and Egypt in June and the third to Senegal, Gambia, Benin and Nigeria in October.

All partners had worked closely together in the preparations for the mission, during the mission, as well as on follow up.

In the last 12 months, I conducted several country visits.

President Abbas made his visit last May.

The assessment mission visited Burundi in May 2004.
