Where should we be redeveloping?

On development issues, the Group reiterated that development lay at the heart of the DWP.

Rural development should be an integral part of national and international development policies.

Therefore the issue of development financing for the developing countries should be looked at in a comprehensive manner.

Clearly, such a programme could be useful for the development of appropriate technologies and could be applied in developing economies.

First, with respect to promoting development, we support the Secretary General's proposals with respect to the obligations both of developing countries, which should be responsible for their own development, and of developed countries, which should assist the efforts to attain the Millennium Development Goals by increasing official development assistance, introducing development oriented trade regimes and enhancing their debt relief measures.

Such actions and developments are to be encouraged.

It will encompass development, security and human rights.

Such measures should be compatible with sustainable development.

There are other disconcerting developments.

Development should be a main focus of United Nations reform.

Development of renewable energy sources should be vigorously promoted.

183. International cooperation for development should take account of the development experiences and circumstances of countries in formulating and implementing comprehensive development approaches.

The representative of the Dominican Republic said that, in the context of the shared responsibility for development, his country had announced the establishment of a Presidential Commission on the MDGs and on Sustainable Development that would monitor and evaluate the country's development related progress.

In the context of the right to development, human rights should be examined and measures be promoted to ensure that opportunities are given to all individuals to improve their well being, and in relation to the promotion of appropriate forms of development, the process of which is a crucial part of the realization of the right of development.

What's next for developing countries?

They should build a coalition for human rights and the right to development.

While the developed world can and should play a bigger part in order to reach the MDGs, the developing countries bear the critical responsibility for their own development.

Over the past 10 years, that had been the area which had undergone the greatest growth, and the Bank had become the world apos s largest source of external financing for the development of human resources.

(iv) Developing countries should make efforts to develop exports in services sectors where they have competitive advantages.

The programme is funded by the Inter American Development Bank and implemented by the Government with the assistance of UNDP.

That programme includes measures aimed at achieving the MDGs and in keeping with the development strategy of our country.

ODA should be tied to the MDG financing gaps outlined in such strategies, and multilateral agencies should coordinate with recipients on MDG based processes.

The developing countries should not be forced to accept obligations which overly restricted their ability to pursue active development policies.

Not so long ago, the Middle East and North Africa achieved high (almost 10 per cent) gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates.

It is high time that we grant development the attention it deserves.
