The current establishment of 202 United Nations owned vehicles reflects a reduction from previous establishment of 339 vehicles, as a result of the suspension of the identification process in May 1996.

With the resumption of the process, it is proposed that the fleet be augmented by an additional 45 light utility (4x4) vehicles to meet the requirements of the nine identification centres, Commission headquarters and three district offices, resulting in a total of 247 United Nations owned vehicles.

It is anticipated, based on past experience, that each of 103 light vehicles will travel an average of 68 kilometres, consuming 8.1 litres per day ( 37,300) each of 16 medium vehicles will travel an average of 41 kilometres, consuming 10.25 litres per day ( 7,400) one heavy vehicle will travel an average of 27 kilometres consuming 10.80 litres per day ( 500) and each of two pieces of engineering equipment will consume 33.6 litres per day ( 3,000).

The proposed vehicle establishment for the budgeted period totals 935 United Nations owned vehicles, consisting of 788 road vehicles and 147 trailers.

No new vehicles were purchased for UNMIH.

The 534 vehicles mentioned above included 15 sedans, 485 4x4s, 26 light buses and 8 medium buses, of which 22 light buses and 8 medium buses were to be provided from stock.

For 289 United Nations owned and 103 contingent owned vehicles.

In practice, vehicle monitoring results in fewer discrepancies regarding vehicular operations and reduced parking summonses.

Provision is made for 60 vehicles less than one year old at the standard rate of 100 per vehicle per month and for 62 vehicles older than one year at the standard rate of 500 per vehicle per month.

As compared to the current level of UNFICYP vehicles, the proposed vehicle establishment includes 48 additional vehicles for commercial hire and the write off of 8 vehicles (four 4x4 trucks) with replacement.
