Choice was not a meaningful term in the abortion debate, as women did not freely choose to have an abortion, a procedure that was very dangerous to women psychologically and spiritually.

The Committee notes with satisfaction the legal measures enacted to prohibit selective abortions and infanticide in mainland China.

In spite of feminist rhetoric about abortion and freedom of choice, if women truly had control of their own bodies they should never be in a position where they had to have recourse to abortion.

(c) The high rate of abortion

36. Abortion prevention and the treatment of complications resulting from abortion is a sensitive issue in most countries.

The United States understood that there was an international consensus that the terms reproductive health services and reproductive rights did not include abortion or constitute support, endorsement or promotion of abortion or the use of abortifacients.

Abortions in Tajikistan are permitted and are legal. Abortion is regarded as unlawful when it is performed outside the walls of a medical facility.

36. A woman who aborts a foetus or is aware that another person is doing so is subjected to a custodial sentence of a maximum of two years or to community service for a period ranging from 52 to 104 days.

The number of illegal abortions is unknown.

340. The Committee recommends that the Government of Peru review its law on abortion and ensure that women have access to full and complete health services, which include safe abortion, and to emergency medical attention when complications arise from abortions.

An abortion could be performed only within 72 hours from the time a woman gave her consent and had been warned about its potential medical consequences.

The number of officially registered abortions in 1993 was 1,208. The abortion rate in relation to the number of births in Poland is thus one of the lowest in Europe.

339. The number of girls under 19 who had had abortions in 2003, although up slightly, still only represented approximately 6 per cent of the number of abortions by women up to the age of 34.

4. Family planning artificial insemination and abortion

Nevertheless it remains concerned that selective abortions and infanticide as well as the abandonment of children, in particular girls and children with disabilities, continue as negative consequences of existing family planning policies and societal attitudes.

The Anti Abortion Act excludes economic or social reasons for artificial abortions, but specifies certain medical reasons (threat to life or a serious threat to the health of the mother serious and irreversible damage to the foetus).
