Bycatch is both a problem for target as well as non target species.

The main species exploited are pilchard, hake, horse mackerel, rock lobster and monkfish.

Tuna and swordfish fisheries are especially petroleum hungry, with energy consumption three times the average.

264. Harmful fishing practices have also caused an annual discarding of an estimated 20 million tons of fish44 as well as the taking of a large number of incidental catches of sharks, marine mammals, turtles and seabirds. Such practices have adversely affected marine biodiversity.

With respect to the problem of stock management and fishing, we would like to emphasize the need to introduce stricter measures to limit the level of exploitation of most stocks.

Many of these fish are consumed indirectly ground up and fed to factory farmed chicken or fish. A typical salmon farm churns through 3 4 kilograms of wild fish for every kilogram of salmon that it produces.

And in the Mediterranean, in the swordfish net fisheries, they make up up to 90 percent.
