Information derived from imaging radar, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), is very different from that obtained from optical sensors, since an SAR is particularly sensitive to the geometrical characteristics of the surface and the object being monitored as well as to their dielectric properties.

This characteristic makes radar imagery especially useful in differentiating areas of dry from moist soil and in the identification of vegetated zones often characterized by high humidity that would give rise to a strong radar response.
