The organization joined the European Road Safety Federation, a non governmental organization that works in close liaison with the European Commission of the European Union.

The Symposium was attended by 51 representatives from 21 African countries and 17 observers from regional organizations, such as the Economic Commission for Africa, the African American Islamic Institute and the Union du Maghreb Arabe, as well as the Government of Norway and the European Commission.

It deserved to be acted on by the UNCTAD secretariat and the Commission of the African Union.

As a result, a draft code of conduct for armed and security forces in Africa was developed, which was submitted to the Commission of the African Union for consideration.

Council members welcome the active engagement of the African Union and reiterate the need for continued support from the international community to the African Union.

The Director also kept the Commission of the African Union apprised of the operational difficulties of the Centre.

In addition to its role of assisting the AU Commission in the planning and management of AMIS, the Assistance Cell participated in the periodic African Union meeting between the Peace and Security Department and the African subregional mechanisms for conflict prevention, management and resolution.

Ms. Struncova (Observer for the European Commission) said that competence would be shared between the EU and its member States.

A proposal from the Commission of the European Union for a new directive is currently under discussion by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.

As mentioned in paragraph 21 above, the Chairman of the AU Commission has informed me that planning is under way for a peace support mission for Somalia by IGAD and the African Union.

The Commission of the European Union attends the meetings as permanent observer.

The emphasis on Africa calls for working closely with the African Union, the Economic Commission for Africa, the secretariat of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and other development partners.
