Bycatch is both a problem for target as well as non target species.

Most of the biomass is low on the food chain, the herbivores, the parrotfish, the surgeonfish that eat the algae.

And this is what happens to that food web when it's stocked with non native fish that never lived there before.

The main species exploited are pilchard, hake, horse mackerel, rock lobster and monkfish.

Of the 32 demersal, pelagic and shellfish fisheries studied, the Central Pacific swordfish tuna longline fishery had the fourth highest fuel use intensity (liters of fuel per ton of catch), and the tuna billfish longline fishery had the highest exceeding even that of shrimp trawling, the second highest.

Recent studies have documented the rapid decline of large predatory fish species such as billfish, sharks and tuna.

The Agreement for the implementation of the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 10 December 1982 relating to the conservation and management of straddling fish stocks and highly migratory fish stocks (the 1995 Fish Stocks Agreement) was adopted on 4 August 1995 by the United Nations Conference on Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks.

In fact, the swordfish caught by the world's leading swordfish harvesters Japan and Taiwan is primarily bycatch from tuna fisheries. In effect, the value of the bycatch fish may exceed the targeted fish.

Finally, negative effects are expected from the poisoning of fish in the South Pacific by a toxic substance found on algae growing on dead coral reefs, and which trigger a disease known as ciguatera there is said to be a correlation between the conduct of nuclear tests in the South Pacific and the increase in poisoning of fish and of human beings by ciguatera.

And there are a lot of different animals that can do this There's jellyfish, there's squid, there's a whole lot of different crustaceans, there's even fish that can do this.

In that regard, the European Union places particular emphasis on the need of major markets for fish and fish products to take measures to eliminate the commerce on which IUU fishing fleets rely.
