We participated in the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), held recently in New York, to express our continued support for the work towards the universalization of the CTBT.

After the resumed session of the first CTBTO PrepCom here in Geneva, the process towards establishing a CTBT organization is now finally on its way.

The opening of the Conference will take place on Wednesday, 21 September, at 3 p.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.

In that context, we welcome the convening of the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the CTBT, held in New York from 21 to 23 September.

The examinations are conducted twice a year at over 100 sites throughout the United Nations system.

That was clearly demonstrated a few weeks ago here in New York at the Conference on Facilitating Entry into Force of the CTBT.

The EU is actively involved in promoting universal adherence to the CTBT and participated actively in the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the CTBT held in Vienna on September 2003.

The programme achieved significant results needs in human resources and logistics for the implementation of the elections were evaluated and a pilot survey for testing the capacity to identify and register voters was organized.

The limited series of five tests undertaken by India was precisely such an exercise.

We also endorse the Final Declaration adopted at the Conference on Facilitating the Entry into Force of the CTBT, held in New York two weeks ago.

XI. Feasibility of holding the national competitive examination in the six official languages

During Phase V, a network test of the IDC and the IMS lasting six months should be carried out. The expert group should conduct a comprehensive evaluation following this test.

The basic obligations of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty have thus been met to refrain from undertaking nuclear test explosions.

National competitive examinations had yet to be held in many countries, and greater efforts were also needed in that area.
