It is a fact that when our organs or tissues are injured, our bone marrow releases stem cells into our circulation.

I invented a device called the MarrowMiner, a much less invasive way for harvesting bone marrow.

So actually how do we harvest this bone marrow?

And we found, to our surprise, that we not only got bone marrow out, but we got 10 times the stem cell activity in the marrow from the Marrow Miner, compared to the normal device.

We use those in my field of bone marrow transplantation.

And hand it off to the nurse. She squirts it into a tin.

Adult stem cells are throughout our body, including the blood forming stem cells in our bone marrow, which we've been using as a form of stem cell therapy for over 40 years.

Six months later, she comes back with acute myeloid leukemia.

So, a few years ago, I'm doing my transplant fellowship at Stanford.

And so this informs, among other things, of course, a treatment for bone marrow transplant, which he undertakes.

We've just come out, we're commercializing, this year, generation 2.0 of the Marrow Miner.

We take our own bone marrow cells and treat a patient with a heart attack, we can see much improved heart function and actually better survival using our own bone marrow drive cells after a heart attack.

They picked as much broken bone as they could that had lodged in my spinal cord.

As one of the consequences of war, there are high rates registered of amputations, lesions of the spinal cord and bone marrow, traumatic injuries of brain, lesions of peripheral nerves and multiple traumas.

So I thought of a minimally invasive approach, and a new device that we call the Marrow Miner.

Throughout this period, the ability to overcome the most common side effect of cancer drugs, myelosuppression (a decrease in blood counts), improved dramatically. It began with the ability to transfuse not only red blood cells into anemic patients, but also platelets, reducing the threat of life threatening bleeding that can accompany cancer therapy.

It may encourage more people to sign up to be potential live saving bone marrow donors.

So why should you care? Bone marrow is a very rich source of adult stem cells.

So it enables you to very rapidly aspirate, or suck out, rich bone marrow very quickly through one hole.

And they're in what appear to be the blood channels that go through the bone.

And, so, very quickly, Bob can just get one puncture, local anesthesia, and do this harvest as an outpatient.

And ultimately and here's a picture of our bone marrow transplant survivors, who come together for a reunion each year at Stanford.

In many countries, the supply of blood for medical purposes relies on voluntary, anonymous donations. Worldwide, more than 11 million people have put their names on donor registries for bone marrow, signifying their willingness to donate their marrow to a stranger.

Some of my hypotheses are that when you first think about skeletal muscle, there's a lot of blood vessels going to skeletal muscle.

In MLL, it's the middle set of genes, and in AML, it's the bottom set of genes.

A pathologist recorded 31 injuries to his body, including cuts, bruising to his face, a dislodged tooth, fractured ribs and bleeding suggestive of haemorrhaging after blood vessels on his face had burst.

You set the fracture, you drew the blood, you spun the blood, looked at it under the microscope, you plated the culture, you injected the antiserum.

It may even enable you to bank your own marrow stem cells, when you're younger and healthier, to use in the future should you need it.
