Health 47. Diarrhoeal diseases, malaria and acute respiratory infections continued to be major causes of mortality and morbidity in southern Sudan, the transitional zone and the camps of displaced persons at Khartoum. Endemic tropical diseases increased in both number and severity, some growing to epidemic levels. An estimated 4.2 million people were reached with basic health services 3.4 million in southern Sudan, 445,000 in the transitional zone and 395,000 in greater Khartoum.

Many registered diseases, taken together, increase the level of lost work days related to work conditions  respiratory diseases, hypertension and ischaemic diseases of the heart and locomotor system diseases.
