More information should be provided on the characteristics of a space object in order to ensure that the definition is consistent with international space law.

In cooperation with space agencies and national disaster management authorities, ESCAP is implementing a project, financed by the Republic of Korea, on enhancing national capacity in policy making on natural disaster management using information, communication and space technology to promote and develop a policy framework on space information products and services.

It's a way of squeezing an enormous amount of information and understanding into a small space.

And so one kind of information space that I take inspiration from is my real desk.

In addition to information on national and international space programmes, the reports could include information in response to requests from the Working Group of the Whole as well as information on spin off benefits of space activities and other topics as requested by the Committee and its subsidiary bodies.2

The Committee noted with satisfaction that the Secretariat had continued to enhance the International Space Information Service and the website of the Office for Outer Space Affairs (www.unoosa.org).

Consequently, the Regional Action Plan includes a framework for information, communication and space technology enabled disaster management.

The Communications Research Laboratory is conducting research and development work on various kinds of space technologies to meet diversified communications needs in an era of advanced information technology and manned space flight.

(g) Strengthening national capacity in human resource development for formulating policies and applications of information, communication and space technology

14.1 The Information, Communication and Space Technology Division is headed by a Chief who is accountable to the Executive Secretary.

Opening remarks made by Theresa Hitchens from the Center for Defense Information underlined that there is still time for an international effort to block the advent of space weapons, through prevention and space surveillance.

The global nature of space activities and the emerging information convergence environment provide opportunities for developing countries to have access to adequate and necessary information products, services and decision supporting tools.

It noted with appreciation that the secretariat had successfully implemented its programme of work on information, communication and space technology, especially in contributing to improved national ICT policies and frameworks, capacity building, enhanced regional cooperation in ICT applications, application of information and space technologies for poverty reduction, environmental protection and disaster management.

The areas of application include space physics, astronomy, astrophysics, technology demonstrations, communications experiments and acquisition of Earth resource data, including disaster information.

The Working Group agreed that international intergovernmental organizations should again be invited to submit information on their practices in registering space objects.

In 2005, the Subcommittee had reviewed information from national and regional space agencies and had prepared an outline of the proposed framework.

The first session of the Subcommittee on Information, Communications and Space Technology was held at Bangkok from 13 to 15 October 2004.

In February 2005 the European Commission had organized an international conference to explore cooperation between space faring and non space faring countries in the development of global services such as positioning, Earth observation and access to information.
