234. The availability and use of iodized salt is not adequate.

All salt used for nutritional purposes and fortification_all flour used for bread making_is now being iodized.

Increased awareness of the importance of iodized salt is necessary to overcome resistance to changing dietary habits.

There are administrative and operational constraints that need to be overcome to be self sufficient in iodized salt.

In the present inquiry, provision of vitamin A supplements was frequently reported as a specific programme component, as is the provision of iodized salt for the prevention of goiter and mental retardation.

Like nutrition programmes for child survival, programmes for maternal nutrition typically include treatment of anaemia through iron supplementation and of iodine deficiency through the use of iodized salt, and programmes to improve levels of intake of vitamin A. In a few instances, more intensive actions are taken, such as support for comprehensive nutrition centres, reported in Sudan, to diagnose and treat women s health needs.
