In addition to the two main Anglican and Catholic religious groups, there are minority Christian communities such as the Uniting Church, the Presbyterian Churches, the Baptist Church, the Churches of Christ, the Jehovah apos s Witnesses, the Lutheran Church, the Orthodox Church, the Pentecostals, the Salvation Army and other Christian denominations.

Evangelicalism is the fastest growing world religion by conversion a trend that underlies the strong expansion of Protestantism in traditionally Roman Catholic Latin America. Protestants in Latin America accounted for only 2.2 of the population in 1900, but 16.4 in 2010, with growth coming mainly at the expense of Catholics, whose population share fell from 90.4 to 82.3 .

What started as a revolution in the eighteenth century meaning of the term is becoming a reproduction of the religious wars that ravaged Europe from 1524 to 1648, pitting Catholics and Protestants against each other in the same way that Sunnis and Shia are pitted against each other today. (In Egypt, however, we are seeing simply the return of a military police state.)

Clubs, too, often used to command tribal loyalty along ethnic or religious lines, depending on their location in large industrial cities Irish clubs versus Jewish clubs in London, for example, or Protestants versus Catholics in Glasgow. Who would have predicted thirty years ago that British soccer fans would have cheered for a London team full of Africans, Latin Americans, and Spaniards, coached by a Frenchman?

When Theodor Herzl was making the rounds of Europe at the end of the nineteenth century, trying to gain support for the establishment of a state for the Jews, he was often rebuffed by rich and powerful Jewish grandees, who saw him as a troublemaker. Instead, he found eager supporters among pious Protestants, for whom Jews belonged in their own holy land rather than in Europe.
