Some delegations stressed the importance of the application of the ecosystem and precautionary approaches in the conservation and management of marine living resources.

To achieve the conservation, management and sustainable use of living marine resources, States must cooperate to prevent, deter or eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities.

The international community has continued to focus over the past year on issues relating to navigation, the conservation and management of living marine resources, and the conservation and management of the biological diversity of the sea bed in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

We really need to develop models, business models, where coastal conservation is an investment, because we already know that these marine reserves provide social, ecological and economic benefits.

Some delegations emphasized the need for a coherent approach to the conservation and management of marine biodiversity both within zones under national jurisdiction and on the high seas.

Major periodic coordination meetings are organized among the regional seas to share experiences, to which the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources is also invited.

The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources played an important role in the creation and implementation of measures to reduce seabird mortality in longline fisheries.

Illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing of toothfish remained one of the major issues faced by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources over the last eight years.

Parties such as Bahamas, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Madagascar mentioned the adoption of national laws on environment that include measures to address climate change, biodiversity, forestry and coastal marine conservation.
