Often, the default option is unsuitable for most individuals for instance, it typically allocates all savings to low return money market funds. Sunstein and Thaler would have the employer choose a default option that works for most people, such as 60 in equities, 30 in bonds, and 10 in money market funds.

But then the housing market stalled, as fears of a property bubble spurred a government clampdown on credit, leaving the stock market the place for middle class savers to put their money. The ensuing boom was a mirror image of the pattern between 1998 and 2001, when the housing market was liberalized and the stock market fell.

So the mutual fund industry had the regulators all to itself. When shocks hit a fragile financial system, as in 2007 and 2008, the government has reason to guarantee the money market funds, as US authorities did. These implicit government guarantees attract more money into these financial channels from nonguaranteed channels, and more hot money flows into firms like MF Global, Lehman, and Bear via repo.

If a discrete exchange rate appreciation is to be sustained, it must reflect expected monetary policies tight money and deflation in the appreciated country, and easy money with inflation in the depreciated country. But domestic money growth in China s immature bank based capital market is high and unpredictable, while many interest rates remain officially pegged.

And social business needs markets, and there are some issues for which you just can't develop the kind of money measures that you need for a market.

One might think that banks would counter balance the mutual fund industry s lobbying efforts, because the likely effect of forcing money market funds to pay for more of their systemic costs would be to expand funds flowing directly to banks. But inflows through money market funds are not so bad for banks, which get the cash without having to set aside reserves or pay for deposit insurance.

As we said before, a second ago, the recipe for success is money and the right people and the right market conditions, right? You should have success then.

According to simple economic models, when the money market is in full prosperity equilibrium, the debt market is too. But in the real world, it might have been more effective for governments to buy back risky debts and induce lenders to write off losses.

Well, we don't need, now, any more Nobel prizes to know that farmers want a fair shake at the market and want to make money, just like everyone else.

CAMBRIDGE The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently rejected proposed rules aimed at making money market funds safer in a financial crisis a rejection that has caused consternation among observers and other regulators. Given the risks that money market funds can pose to the global financial system, as shown by their destabilizing role in the 2008 financial crisis, it is not hard to see why they are worried.

Bad Money, Good Money

They can save the money that they were going to spend on charcoal, and they can produce excess and sell it in the market to people who aren't making their own.

That happened when Lehman Brothers failed in September 2008. The Reserve Fund, a well established money market fund with too many unpaid IOUs from Lehman, could not keep its value steady.

The proposals that the SEC rejected were aimed at making money market funds more robust by requiring that each fund maintain capital reserves or let its value float and not be rounded up to reflect its true, underlying risk. The proposal would also have required that money market funds hold back a fraction of some redemptions, thereby making investors take some risk that funds might not have complete transactional liquidity if their investments weakened.

Also, much of the money needed to buy arms in Afghanistan originates, in one way or another, from poppy cultivation and the burgeoning drug trade, which in itself creates a market for arms.

In this regard, however, the stock market bubble that developed in the first half of the year should be viewed as an exception. Not only did Chinese regulators enable the bubble s growth by allowing retail investors many of them newcomers to the market to engage in margin trading (using borrowed money) the policy response to the market correction that began in late June has also been highly problematic.

For example, assets may prove less liquid than investors suppose, as happened with money market funds in 2008 today, skeptics worry about exchange traded funds (ETFs). Or overly complex securities could become hard to price.

Policymakers in many emerging market countries worry that surging capital inflows will drive up the value of the local currency, destabilize financial markets, and fuel economic overheating. Their reactions range from buying up the foreign money to prevent currency appreciation to adopting capital controls, and, in extreme cases, to keeping the money out altogether.

CHICAGO In an interesting recent book, What Money Can t Buy The Moral Limits of the Market, the Harvard philosopher Michael Sandel points to the range of things that money can buy in modern societies and gently tries to stoke our outrage at the market s growing dominance. Is he right that we should be alarmed?

Foreign investors are repatriating their funds on an unprecedented scale. Ironically, the measures being taken to resolve the crisis in advanced countries are making it more attractive to bring money home, making life harder for emerging market countries.
