86. The view was expressed that the activities of ESCAP related to landlocked countries should take into account the problems and needs of transit countries.

12. Invites the international community to continue to provide technical and financial support to landlocked and transit developing countries to assist with effective implementation of their cooperation agreements and arrangements on transit transport, taking into account the fact that many landlocked and transit developing countries have concluded bilateral and regional arrangements and are making efforts to implement them

It was generally emphasized that the existing bilateral and subregional transit agreements needed to be refined and reviewed to take into account the recent developments in the transit system such as the expansion of existing facilities, the establishment of inland container terminals (dry ports) and the use of new transit routes by rail, road and inland waterways.

Several of the transit developing countries also outlined other measures undertaken to help improve transit transport efficiency including the liberalization of transit services.

It was noted that future work with transit countries was envisaged regarding technical assistance on the implementation of transit arrangements and regarding a project on transit corridors.

58. Designation of transit corridors is fundamental for the establishment of transit infrastructure facilities and of transport routes of a harmonized technical standard acceptable for transit operations.

This review will take into account the results of consultations between individual land locked countries and their transit neighbours, which will be organized as part of the intergovernmental meeting.
