Major African economies had an important role to play in this process.

Re evaluation exercises are also underway in a number of African economies.

Furthermore, African economies depend on the export of commodities for their development.

Through the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), the United States is helping African economies seize the opportunities of trade.

If uncontrolled, malaria will continue to be a major economic burden on African economies.

In addition, it is essential to support the efforts of African countries to diversify their economies.

Thus, it is vital to identify the best ways to promote further integration of these flows into African economies.

9. We attach great importance to the diversification of African economies and increased market access for their export products.

But a manufacturing boom will not happen by itself. African governments must undertake industrial policies to help restructure their economies.

UNCTAD had been requested to analyse trade related questions of investment and incentives in the agricultural sector of African economies.

In spite of this, African countries had undertaken meaningful, sometimes painful reforms towards liberalization of their economies to benefit from globalization.

The effective liberalization of international trade can generate sufficient resources for African economies and thus fund various education, health and infrastructure programmes.

50. The changing employment patterns and the structure of unemployment in African economies form the base of an ongoing UNU WIDER effort.

17. Calls upon African countries to promote the development and strengthening of their domestic private sectors and to facilitate their effective involvement in the growth and development of, and economic integration among, the African economies

Its successful beginning in small African economies, however, has in the past created the image of quot a system for small economies quot the recent implementation of ASYCUDA in medium size economies such as Romania or the Philippines has helped to correct this, and the product is now better positioned.

UNCTAD and ECA have jointly organized several events including the 1994 Conference of African Trade Ministers whose objective was to assess the impact of the Uruguay Round on African economies and to identify the necessary technical assistance.

Among other measures, these require the promotion of the private sector and foreign direct investment in the African countries, the expansion of market access for the export products of African countries, diversification of African economies and commodities, the provision of adequate and predictable sources of external financing and the resolution of the serious external indebtedness of many African countries.

The project is assessing the impact of import liberalization on industrial performance and on the generation of technological capabilities during the 1980s in selected African economies.

98. Special efforts are needed by the developed economies to ensure access for competitive African goods, even in the face of domestic political lobbies resisting increased competition.

The second part reports on the distribution of award of contracts for procurement of SDS to developing, least developed and African countries and countries with economies in transition.

In most African economies, the modern services sector has yet to become a driving force of economic growth, competitiveness and development, as in other developing and developed countries.

Many developing countries continue to face severe obstacles to economic growth, which particularly affect smaller economies dependent on commodity exports, as is the case of many African countries.

The present report includes the procurement contracts for SDS awarded to all Member States, in particular to developing, least developed and African countries and countries with economies in transition.

The African countries together received only about 2 per cent of such flows, despite their efforts to attract private investment through structural adjustment programmes and liberalization of their economies.

39. Of the three forms of private capital flow (loans, FDI and portfolio equity), FDI and portfolio equity investments are more relevant in the present context of African economies.

Continued efforts are needed to enhance market access for products of export interest to Africa and to support the African economies efforts at diversification and building of supply capacity.

Moreover, African countries are building on their relationship with China to advance cooperation with other emerging markets, including India, South Korea, Turkey, Brazil, and Malaysia. Such efforts have bolstered global demand for commodities, while diversifying African economies and enhancing the productive capacity of domestic suppliers.

8. Adequate openness to trade and full integration into the international trading system constitute a crucial objective for African countries. However, the timing, sequencing and degree of liberalization should be adjusted to the needs and constraints of African economies as they build up their international competitiveness.

(b) Symposium on the importance of the African Information Society Initiative (AISI), utilizing information and information technology to build competitiveness of African economies and society as well as policy reforms to provide a supportive environment, to be held three times each year in 1998 and 1999

Aware of the devastating impact of crime on the national economies of African States and of the fact that crime is a major obstacle to harmonious and sustainable development in Africa,

Without a robust industrial base, African countries in general and LDCs in particular will remain disadvantaged and dependent on declining prices of natural resources and on largely agricultural, rural based economies.

The high food and fuel prices that prevailed until recently have taken a heavy toll on the finances of many African economies. Now they face a second blow from the global recession.

With industrial development, the continent can take decisive steps towards full throttle competition in the globalized marketplace. But without it, as African leaders themselves declared last June in Harare, African economies will be condemned to persistent crisis, dependence on humanitarian relief and deepening poverty, despair and political unrest.
