We in the European Union have seen the vibrant Muslim communities in our own countries, and from that experience have seen how Islamic and Western cultures can be partners in a global society.

Although that civil society conference had been held at United Nations Headquarters in New York in the previous three years, the Committee Bureau had decided to follow the recommendation of the NGO Network to hold it in a European capital, so that more European and Middle Eastern organizations could be represented.

This statement represents the right way forward. Muslim immigrants, whether first , second , or third generation, must be able to integrate fully into European society, gaining the same opportunities as Europe s other residents and citizens.
