The limited restrictions placed on the fishery are targeted and specific to particular fish species and are intended to ensure that the particular vulnerability of each species is duly considered, and that all persons using the resource, including the author and the other members of the Hiawatha First Nation, benefit there from.

However, it had prohibited from 1997 the issuance of new fishing permits for any gear used to catch large pelagic fish (drift net, longline) in order to prevent any increase in fishing effort of highly migratory species, in accordance with the recommendations of international organizations concerned with the preservation of those species.
