The panellist from the WTO Secretariat informed the Commission about the activities of the Negotiating Group on Trade Facilitation.

The Group of 77 highlighted the increasing importance of international transport services and trade facilitation for the competitiveness of developing countries, particularly in the context of the new geography of trade .

This event addressed the basic issues of trade facilitation and the progress made by the WTO Negotiating Group on Trade Facilitation (NGTF), taking into account the perspective of landlocked developing countries.

Regarding the Commission on Trade in Goods and Services, and Commodities (Commission 1), his Group considered that the trade and environment issues were well focused and would lead to good results.

In 2005, the Statistics Division established the Expert Group on Distributive Trade Statistics in order to obtain assistance and guidance during the revision of existing United Nations recommendations on distributive trade statistics.

It was his delegation s understanding that the report on the International Trade Centre UNCTAD WTO (ITC) (A 51 933) had not been discussed in the Joint UNCTAD WTO Advisory Group on the International Trade Centre, or in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) or the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In particular, ECA and ECE jointly organized a capacity building workshop for the African Group on the World Trade Organization negotiations on trade facilitation in order to assist the effective participation of the landlocked and transit developing countries of Africa in trade facilitation negotiations.
