97. In view of the growth of United Nations civilian police operations, the Special Committee recognizes the need to strengthen the Civilian Police Unit in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

These will be created when the volume of operations is low, but potential for portfolio growth is high.

The international community has taken note of the enormous growth in United Nations peace operations over the past two decades.

In the past few years, logging operations have mainly been carried out for the purposes of thinning forests to ensure proper growth.

28. The volume and complexity of both of these services has increased substantially in recent years owing entirely to the growth in peacekeeping operations.
