176. A survey carried out among NGOs that make up the Network for Rural Women as well as those NGOs that, without being part of this Network, engage in activities involving rural women, has provided a general picture of the nature of their activities.

The main obstacles facing rural inhabitants are remoteness of rural offices from the central rayon hospital, the small assortment of contraceptives in the pharmacy network and the low level of awareness and lack of attentiveness of the people with regard to their health.

As of April 2004, there were more than 58,000 subscribers to the network, providing telecommunication access to more than 60 million people living in rural areas of Bangladesh.
