There has been a steady effort to arrive at market based prices for energy commodities, and prices of some of them (notably oil products) have for some years been derived from the world market price.

High world oil prices and capital inflows are strengthening the balance of payments and contributing to exchange rate appreciation.

The oil price goes through the floor. That company goes out of business, and then you can bring the oil price back up.

The sustainability of energy systems became the focus of concern worldwide when world crude oil prices spiralled upwards during the 1970s and early 1980s.

In my ongoing quest to become better at forecasting, I began, a few years ago, to pay attention to the five year forward oil price as it compares to the Brent crude oil spot price, the price of a barrel of oil today. I suspect that the five year forward price is much less influenced by speculation in the oil market than the spot price, and more representative of true commercial needs.

They thus pose a significant threat of inflation, and the uncertainty about their future course is likely to discourage investment.

At the same time, oil hedging not only raises oil prices but results in huge reserves of cash in oil producing countries.

There is a huge amount of gas to be saved, about half the projected gas at about an eighth of its price.

Further, the crisis in the Asia region, which accounted for approximately half of the increase in world consumption of petroleum products during the 1990s, largely contributed to the recent fall of world crude oil prices.

The world s unending appetite for oil, beyond its ability or willingness to produce, has contributed a third factor. Rising oil prices transferred money to oil rich countries, again contributing to the flood of liquidity.

Such fundamental changes in the supply side of the market naturally drove oil prices lower a lot lower. Prices plummeted by more than half in a period of just a few months last year, catching many oil traders and analysts by surprise.

For most non oil exporting developing countries, the improvement in commodity prices stimulated 2004 growth, outweighing the negative effects of higher oil prices.

UNCTAD is also actively working on issues related to the impact of oil price volatility on African oil importing and oil exporting countries.

The prices of raw materials such as oil or coal continue to rise.

304. In 1997, offshore oil production worldwide increased to 22.5 million barrels per day, representing nearly one third of the world s total oil production.

Fracking technology has also enabled the US to tap its large shale oil reserves, making it the world s largest petroleum producer, ahead of Saudi Arabia. Citigroup estimates that, by 2020, oil will cost just 75 per barrel, and the former head of international forecasting at the OECD suggests that the number could be closer to 50.

And the OPEC nations are the ones that price the oil.

In terms of retail sales, the prices of gasoline at No. 92 and No. 95 of Beijing CNPC and Sinopec gas stations are 7.66 yuan liter and 8.15 yuan liter respectively.

Furthermore, oil producing countries were paying a high price for the technology which they were importing.

IEA envisages the current peak in oil prices to be temporary, and prices over the planning period are assumed to return to 25 30 per barrel.

The lower dollar also reduces the purchasing power of oil exporters. If nominal oil prices remain constant while the dollar declines, the real income of the oil producing countries declines, resulting in less investment in additional capacity and maintenance.

Natural disasters had also had an impact on oil prices as several refineries had ceased operation.

Surging oil prices are draining our foreign exchange revenues.

And all the oil companies in the world are chasing after me for a deal.

The situation is, by no means, unconnected with the soaring price of oil, which is causing serious problems in the global economy and threatening the economic gains made by many developing countries.

The only thing that really reduces the amount of oil that we consume is much higher prices.
