One of the principal outcomes of the session had been the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration on the Role and Mandate of the United Nations Environment Programme, which asserted UNEP as the leading global environmental authority, with the role of setting the global environmental agenda, promoting the implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serving as an advocate and catalyst for action in the environment field.
