On 20 April 2005, the communal elections law and electoral code were promulgated, and CENI announced the revised electoral schedule communal elections on 3 June legislative elections on 4 July Senate elections on 29 July presidential elections (by the new Parliament) on 19 August and colline elections on 23 September 2005.

(c) Voter registration in preparation for the forthcoming elections

In Afghanistan, for example, we haven't just had one election or two elections. We've gone through three elections, presidential and parliamentary. And what do we find?

Legislative elections had been held, and a presidential election was under way.

Legislative elections were held on 4 July and Senate elections on 29 July.

A first round of legislative and presidential elections was held on 13 March 2005 a second round was scheduled for 8 May 2005.

The presidential elections were successfully conducted in 2004 and the parliamentary and provincial elections are due to be held on 18 September 2005.

Recognizing with satisfaction also the organization and holding of general elections in Guatemala at the end of 1999, of municipal and parliamentary elections in El Salvador in March 2000 and of municipal elections in Nicaragua in November 2000,

Voters were able to exercise their franchise freely, despite a tense pre election period.

Communal elections were held on 3 June 2005, with over 70 per cent of the registered voters voting for municipal councillors.

Municipal elections were planned for 2006 and elections to the national parliament for the following year.

The Electoral Assistance Division with UNDP and the Secretariado developed a technical assistance project to assist in the holding of local elections in the country.

The democratic process which started with the referendum on a new constitution in February 2005 continued with commune elections in April and legislative elections for the National Assembly and Senate, in June and July respectively, and was successfully completed by presidential elections on 26 August and colline elections on 23 September 2005.

Owing to logistical and financial constraints, the Government is holding village elections in a phased manner three further districts will go to the polls in March, to be followed by elections in the eight remaining districts between April and June, according to a schedule to be decided by the National Electoral Commission.
