The World Water Assessment Programme provides comprehensive information and analysis on the current state of the world's water resources and potential policy solutions, bringing together relevant inputs from Governments, NGOs, academic institutions and the private sector.

The WHO UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for the Water and Sanitation Sector, a programme that has committed UNICEF, WHO and the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council to assist countries in developing national capacities for monitoring, is expected to contribute to the process of monitoring and reporting on the goals for water and sanitation between now and 2001.

Nicaragua is committed to a housing programme for the period 1996 2000 aiming at the provision of 96,000 housing units through improvement of existing stock, new housing and the delivery of serviced lots.

New efforts are under way to address water quality monitoring within the WHO UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP).

Of relevance for the Water for Life Decade is the International Hydrological Programme, which is the UNESCO intergovernmental scientific cooperative programme for water resources.

93. The Water and Sanitation Programme ( 502,000) was launched in four provinces (Lower Congo, Kasaï Oriental, Kasaï Occidental, Katanga).

The programme also played a major role in the emergency job creation programme and emergency infrastructure projects, such as water, wastewater, storm water drainage, electricity and roads, for the rehousing of families whose shelters were destroyed as a result of Israeli military actions.

The Rural Supply Programme

A. Programmes and Funding

The programme was sponsored by UNICEF and the International Water and Sanitation Centre, with the support of Oxfam GB and the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council.

Tunisia has been implementing its National Programme of Rehabilitation Improvement in low income neighbourhoods, which has made qualitative changes in the living conditions in these settlements through the provision of roads, sanitation, potable water and electricity.

These agreements have led to substantial programme collaboration, for example on the Water for Asian Cities programme, which provides a pipeline of 10 million in grants from the Asian Development Bank and UN Habitat for the first two phases and 500 million in Asian Development Bank loans for water and sanitation projects in cities across Asia.
