Poor nutrition and a more limited access to health care and health education jeopardize the overall health of girls. This leads to stunted growth and nutritional deficiencies such as anemia.

These workers provide services in child health, nutrition, family planning and treatment of minor ailments.

Global health and nutrition partnerships have been instrumental in advocating for and raising the profile of health and nutrition for mothers and children both nationally and internationally.

220. The overall goals of nutrition and food policy are described as (a) to help to motivate the population to choose a diet that provides the nutrients required to promote health and prevent disease and (b) to ensure consumers wholesome food.

One fifth of that assistance will be allocated to basic social services such as nutrition, health and education.

Work on this programme comprises a long standing commitment by the UNU to address major nutrition concerns in developing countries and to confront national food, nutrition and health problems.

(h) Basic social services for all primary health care, nutrition, education, safe water and sanitation, population and shelter

Microcredit should be viewed as complementary to the provision of basic services like education, housing, health and nutrition.

A number of health programmes on reproductive health, nutrition, HIV AIDS and mental health for victims of domestic violence are listed in paragraphs 318 327.

UNOPS is also training male and female health workers so that they can advise on basic health, family planning and nutrition in rural areas.

Within the regular health system, these activities are aimed at strengthening the capacities for providing health services to the young in many areas (reproductive health, mental health, nutrition, etc.).

More than 70,000 Lady Health Workers working at village level provided services for micronutrient supplementation and counseling on growth promotion, maternal and child nutrition, breast feeding and complementary feeding on a regular basis.

Recognizing that health and nutrition outcomes are not the results of action in the health and nutrition sectors alone, UNICEF will build on its intersectoral experience to promote innovative approaches to address immediate and underlying determinants of maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition.

Other delegations expressed appreciation for the focus on health and nutrition, given high infant mortality rates.

The Chiefs of the Health and Nutrition Sections presented the rationale, process, guiding principles and expected results of a joint health and nutrition strategy to be presented to the Executive Board for approval at the first regular session of 2006.
