Funding for STD HIV AIDS as a proportion of total population assistance has increased steadily since 1995, when UNFPA first began to monitor expenditures according to the four population categories of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, from 9 per cent to 47 per cent in 2003.

The incidence of HIV in the adult population reveals a pattern of slow growth and looks set to level out from 2010.

These infections are known as the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). They are unfamiliar to the developed world, and their names are often difficult to pronounce filariasis (elephantiasis), onchocerciasis (river blindness), schistosomiasis (bilharzia), and others, particularly intestinal worms.

Another aspect of the linkage between the protection of human rights and effective HIV AIDS programmes is apparent in the fact that the incidence or spread of HIV AIDS is disproportionately high among some populations.

The changes occurring in the population pyramid have brought about a demographic transition which has impacted the epidemiological profile, with increasing demand for the treatment of diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are more complex and costly and which mainly affect the adult population.

The United Nations Population Fund promotes young peoples' involvement as volunteer leaders in HIV AIDS programmes.

This situation has resulted in the population experiencing high levels of morbidity due to preventible diseases.

According to the United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS), life expectancy in nine African countries has already dropped to below 40 because of HIV AIDS.

UNFPA monitors expenditures for population activities according to the following four costed population categories of the International Conference on Population and Development (a) family planning services, (b) basic reproductive health services, (c) STD HIV AIDS activities and (d) basic research, data and population and development policy analysis.

The focus of UNFPA work in HIV AIDS remains (a) the prevention of HIV infection among young people (b) women and AIDS and (c) comprehensive condom programming.

During the biennium, the Office produced video spots on human trafficking and HIV AIDS, as well as radio spots to prevent drug abuse and HIV AIDS.

So the data that I have suggests that if you double export volume, it will lead to a quadrupling of new HIV infections.
