In 1997 training was provided to around 1,250 primary school teachers, 70 head teachers, and 50 regional trainers, based on existing training modules.

Sixty bilingual teachers were being trained, and they in turn would train 2,400 other teachers.

Three thousand six hundred children have been trained in various trades, while 1,200 others are currently in training.

In addition to over 300 staff members who attended training sessions in 2004, a second round of training sessions will train a minimum of 150 field staff during the first half of 2005.

In the framework of the project, training will be provided primarily to trainers and 300 civil servants, and training strategies will be drawn up.

Vocational training is provided to some 5,200 students in eight training centres.

The ESF at Amman training centre provided in service training to 644 UNRWA teachers, including 212 women, and pre service teacher education to 347 secondary school graduates, including 292 women.

These councils have so far trained 48,486 trainees.

Besides, 8807 apprentices are trained under the Apprenticeship Training Programme in the country.

(a) Training of 240 young developers

Three hundred school counsellors from the Ministry of Education were trained, with over 300 still to receive training.

About 70 engineers had been trained as part of the technology transfer training programme.

A total of 1,225 trainees, including 477 women and 363 boarding students, were accommodated in 16 trade courses and 12 technical semi professional courses at Amman training centre and Wadi Seer training centre during the 1997 1998 school year.

In addition, 900 gendarmes have followed a four month training programme at the National Gendarmerie School at Ruhengeri and, in mid March 1996, 750 communal police officers completed a four month proficiency course at the Gishari Communal Police training centre.

The training course was attended by 25 participants, three of whom were female.

Almost 500 recruits are currently undergoing training at the Hastings Police Training School.

A total of 167 gendarmes completed the workshops.

Another 255 recruits were due to be trained over the coming year.

The Educational Sciences Faculty (ESF) at the Ramallah Men apos s and Ramallah Women apos s Training Centres accommodated 480 students, of whom 178 were men and 302 women, in a four year pre service teacher training programme offered at the post secondary level.

The three UNRWA vocational and technical training centres in the West Bank Ramallah Women s training centre (RWTC), Ramallah Men s training centre (RMT), and Kalandia training centre (KTC) accommodated 1,089 trainees during the 1997 1998 school year, of whom 460 were women and 769 were boarding students.

The Agency also provided teacher training to 119 students at Siblin Training Centre in Lebanon.

In 2004, 21 staff members were trained as trainers for ECW country workshops training roll outs took place in 14 country offices and two regional bureaux 430 staff members and partners were trained.

The Educational Sciences Faculty (ESF) at the Amman Training Centre reached full capacity during the 1996 97 school year, providing in service training to 619 UNRWA teachers, including 164 women, and pre service teacher training to 257 secondary school graduates, including 207 women.

The ESF at RMTC and RWTC accommodated 464 students, of whom 306 were women, in a four year pre service teacher training programme offered at the post secondary level.

The Network provides training for the educational system apos s 650,000 teachers.

The first such training took place in February 1995 and a further 2,000 officers had been identified to undergo training in the course of 1996.

The Siblin training centre provided vocational and technical training to 594 trainees, of whom 121 were women and 206 boarding students, in 13 trade courses and seven technical semi professional courses.

Training courses for electoral officials are in progress and will eventually involve some 150,000 Iraqi electoral officers.

Training for 48,770 teachers in courses requiring attendance

A total of 1,250 trainees, including 452 women and 448 boarding students, were accommodated in 16 trade course and 12 technical semi professional training courses at Amman Training Centre and Wadi Seer Training Centre during the reporting period.

With a view to increasing the accountability and professionalism of the police, during the reporting period, professional ethics offices were opened in the districts.

In addition, some 3,400 police personnel have undergone various in service training programmes and development courses, including computer training.

45. Training Officer (Training Information)

About 45 staff members were trained in Westlaw and Nexis.

Since 1993, 85 paralegals have been trained.

The training courses were attended each week by 25 participants (high ranking police officials from different police units), making a total of 150 participants, and also by representatives from the military with responsibility for internal security.

Six months after the end of this course, the UNCTAD secretariat requested the 25 participants from various countries in Africa (selected from over 50 applicants) and their respective supervisors in the ministries to respond to an evaluation to gauge the impact of this course on their professional development and value added to their tasks in the ministries.

The four year pre service programme, which granted degrees in classroom teaching or in the specialized topics of Arabic, mathematics, science and vocational education, was offered to 737 secondary school graduates, including 509 women, at the Amman, Ramallah Men apos s and Ramallah Women apos s training centres.
