We have made major investments in education to ensure that all children boys and girls receive free, high quality basic schooling up to the secondary and university levels.

In Colombia the level of education on indigenous reservations is reported to be minimal, owing to a lack of infrastructure and teachers.

General basic (9 year) education is compulsory.

Basic education comprises three levels pre school, primary and secondary.

Along with free education, the Government has continued the development of medical schools that have maintained high standards and has provided the basis for the advancement of medical education and research.

The local education authorities are responsible for initial, basic and special education and teacher training, as well as further training, upgrading and refresher courses for basic education teachers.

Colombia apos s formal education system consists of preschool, basic primary, basic secondary and occupational secondary, and higher education, which is divided into technical, technological and university (undergraduate and postgraduate).

Lastly, in connection with the student population in basic secondary and vocational secondary education it is important to mention the quality of the education from the standpoints of gender and equality for women.
