The date of foreign exchange applicable will be specified by the Customs General Administration.

Apart from changes in the value arising from translation of currencies, all investments are stated at cost.

Gold may be a store of value for wealth, but it is not a means of payment you cannot pay for your groceries with it. Nor is it a unit of account prices of goods and services, and of financial assets, are not denominated in gold terms.

Certainly a lot of the discrepancy is attributable to valuation effects since 1982, the dollar value of overseas assets has increased repeatedly, owing to increases in the dollar value of foreign currency and increases in the assets foreign currency value. But part of the discrepancy also reflects the discovery of missing assets, some of which may have originated in the reinvestment of overseas income.

That led to the next step Foreign firms wishing to invest in China were allowed to tap those deposits by issuing renminbi denominated bonds, and eligible offshore financial institutions were permitted to invest renminbi funds in China s interbank bond market.

The analysis presented by Gita Gopinath, which establishes a connection between the price pass through to prices from exchange rate changes and the currency in which trade is invoiced, speaks plainly to this issue. Given that most emerging market countries trade is conducted in dollars, currency depreciation should push up import prices almost one for one.
