The Assistant Secretary General for Public Information made a statement.

A number of speakers underscored the special value of centres as sources of information for developing countries in particular.

Press releases were issued on the texts of the statements by the Secretary General.

Another delegation, speaking on behalf of a group, commended the Department for its efforts to reflect linguistic diversity in the information it produced and in that context appreciated its press releases in both working languages and encouraged their dissemination over the Internet.

Shortly thereafter, that statement was issued to the press through, inter alia, the Xinhua news agency.

24. All press releases issued by the Department are now posted on the Internet, in English and French, as are comprehensive summaries of daily briefings by the Spokesman for the Secretary General and texts of the Secretary General s statements, for immediate access by the news media and the public at large.

The representative of Romania, in his capacity as Chairperson of the Committee on Information, made a statement.

His office also organized 27 press conferences given by the Secretary General at Headquarters and abroad, 82 press briefings by Member States, 150 press conferences by senior officials and 11 background briefings.

The Department is reissuing the Declaration on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (DPI 1709), with a new introduction.

One speaker, addressing the Committee on behalf of a large group, acknowledged UNESCO s important work in cooperating with news agencies and broadcasting organizations in developing countries to disseminate information on priority issues.

23.11 The subprogramme will be implemented primarily by the News and Media Division, supported by the Office of the Spokesman for the Secretary General and, away from Headquarters, by the United Nations information centres and services, information components and regional hubs, where applicable.

33. A number of speakers underscored the importance of the Department s dissemination of information to developing countries.

In 1995 and 1996, UNIS issued 824 press releases in English and 753 in French.

The Department of Public Information should continue its information activities in various local languages.

It is to be printed in English (20,000), French (15,000) and Spanish (15,000) and distributed widely through the network of 68 Information Centres and Services.

The development of contents in local languages was therefore indispensable if advances in information technology were to benefit peoples whose language of information and instruction was not English.
