The request for an assessment of the extent of land degradation in drylands came from the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), out of which the Land Degradation Assessment in Drylands (LADA) project was conceived.

Now that the Decade was nearly over, it was time to reflect on the progress achieved, in order to address the future.
