Fukushima is likely to stunt the appeal of nuclear power in a way similar to the accident at the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania in 1979, not to mention the far more severe meltdown of the Chernobyl reactor in 1986. If the fallout from those incidents is a reliable guide, however, nuclear power s advocates will eventually be back.

For all of the tension and fear surrounding the fight against a nuclear meltdown at Fukushima, we should not forget that the plant and with it the notion of a nuclear energy industry was subjected to an extraordinary test, in the strictest sense of the word. Were it not for some design flaws that would not be repeated today, Fukushima might well have survived intact and history would be so different.

We attach great importance to this document as a basis for achieving the common objective of the verifiable denuclearization of the Korean peninsula in a peaceful manner.

The joint statement of the recent six party talks clearly mentioned the obligation of the United States vis à vis the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

It consists of seven islands (Tutuila, Aunuu, Ofu, Olosega, Tau, Swains and Rose) and several lesser islands belonging to the Samoan group.

As the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of the Marshall Islands had stated during the general debate at the current session, the knowledge gleaned on the effects of nuclear weapons from the test programme conducted in the Marshall Islands had made it possible to avert a nuclear war during the cold war.

45. Mr. Relang (Marshall Islands) recalled that between 1946 and 1957, the Republic of the Marshall Islands had been the site of 67 nuclear weapons tests conducted by the Administering Power during the trusteeship period.

For example, Japan s nuclear regulatory authority was not sufficiently independent, and oversight of the plant operator, TEPCO, was weak. At the Fukushima site, the backup power supply, essential for maintaining vital safety functions such as cooling the reactors and spent fuel rods, was not properly protected.

The facility s robust design is similar to that of the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant, the world s largest, in Niigata, which was unscathed by the Chūetsu offshore earthquake (measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale) in July 2007. Fukushima Daiichi withstood the earthquake, but no one considered the possibility of ten meter high tsunami waves hitting a nuclear plant.

Thailand supported a peaceful solution to the issue in the six party talks, and a nuclear weapon free Korean peninsula.

It comprises one large island, known as Grande Terre, and smaller islands known as the Loyalty Islands (Ouvéa, Maré, Lifou and Tiga), the Bélap Archipelago, the Isle of Pines and Huon Islands.
