V. United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

An overview of the operational activities of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) during 2004 2005 is presented below.

Mr. Costa (Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)), introducing agenda items 106 and 107, explained that the mandate of UNODC required it to prevent and contain the human and social costs of drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism by means of a comprehensive and balanced approach.

It is often assumed that drug related crime is already included in the concept of organized crime.

The proposed project is linked to the ongoing efforts of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to collect and analyse data on major drug and crime issues.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between UNIDO and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was also of relevance in that context.

23. The rehabilitation and social reintegration of drug offenders and drug abusing offenders is a fundamental tool in the prevention and control of illicit drug abuse and traffic.

It had also enacted laws stiffening penalties for drug related crimes and providing for confiscation of the property of drug traffickers.

In its efforts to fight illicit narcotic drugs, Myanmar cooperated with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Several speakers emphasized that the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) should provide assistance in that area to Member States, upon request.

A UNODC regional assessment of organized crime was published covering Central Asia.

UNODC had achieved substantial progress in that regard since 2002, when it had set out to recast drug and crime policies into a broader development mould, based on the promotion of justice and good governance, while grouping drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism under a single operational umbrella.

Over the last two years, UNODC has restructured its operations and streamlined its processes, emphasizing a new integrated approach on drugs and crime and an examination of the critical role that prevention plays in combating drugs and crime.
