emissions to air TRI toxics, sulphur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, CO2 etc.

N2O emissions from agricultural sector represented roughly 87 per cent of the total N2O emissions.

A number of initiatives have been taken to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions and nitrogen oxygen emissions.

(i) Reduce emissions of nitrous oxide.

352. Annex VI prohibits deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances, which include halons and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and sets limits on the emissions of sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide from ship exhausts.

Box 1. CO2 and N2O emissions from the transport sector

Omissions identified by the review team include CO2 emissions from land use change, CO2 from incineration of carbon in waste, N2O from the manufacture of inorganic chemicals and N2O from animal wastes.

Emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) totalled 108 Gg, carbon monoxide (CO) 6.7 Gg, nitrous oxide (NOx) 2,740 Gg and non methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) 25,400 Gg.

Nitrous oxide will remain a small component of Icelandic emissions.

Thermal power plants emit, among other pollutants, sulphur dioxide, waste ashes, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide, which are mainly responsible for air pollution.

They indicate that CO2 emissions are projected to decrease by 33 per cent, CO by 40 per cent, NOx by 8 per cent and NMVOC by 27 per cent.

But the nitrogen oxides that diesel engines emit are considered carcinogens, and can cause asthma.

CH4 and N2O accounted for 11 per cent and 4 per cent of total emissions, while emissions of HFCs, PFCs and SF6 taken together were 1.8 per cent of total emissions.

Such activities include, inter alia, methane emissions from agriculture and waste sectors, coal mining, biomass burning carbon dioxide emissions from land use change and forestry and nitrous oxide emissions from all sectors.

The transport sector the fastest growing emission source contributed about 50 per cent of total emissions of non methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and accounted for roughly 40 per cent of nitrogen oxide (NOx ) and over a quarter of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.

Emissions of methane could be slightly reduced, while those of nitrous oxide could increase.

CO2 represented 82 per cent of 1990 emissions, methane (CH4) about 8 per cent and nitrous oxide (N2O) about 10 per cent.

(iii) The work in ICAO to maintain existing and develop further NOx emissions standards that minimize NOx emissions without compromising technological gains in fuel efficiency and CO2 reductions should continue

Emissions of CH4 and N2O are projected to increase by 5 and 3 per cent, respectively.

The national communication includes aggregated emission estimates using global warming potentials (GWP), with CO2 emissions contributing 80 per cent of total emissions expressed as CO2 equivalent, methane (CH4) 12 per cent, nitrous oxide (N2O) 7 per cent and indirect GHG nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and non methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) 1 per cent.

The majority of them target CO2 emissions with consequent effects on N2O and ozone precursors.

As with CH4, the trend in N2O emission varied by Party and source.

Emissions of non CO2 gases are relatively uncertain, and the team concluded that the estimate of nitrous oxide is still likely to be revised significantly downwards.

The trends in total emissions, as well as for CO2, CH4 and N2O, and the trends for the most important sources for 1990 to 1995, are included in tables B.1 to B.16.

On the other hand, their application results in more N2O emissions.

Many noted that measures to mitigate CO2 or CH4 emissions in energy and agriculture would also reduce N2O emissions.

The trends in emissions from 1990 to 1995 for methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) varied among the reporting Parties, with the majority of them reporting lower emissions of CH4, and about half reporting lower emissions of N2O.

However, UN 1975 Nitric oxide and dinitrogen tetroxide mixture may be transported in pressure drums.

One of the developments that is expected to result in appreciable reductions in CO2 and NOx emissions is the wider penetration of natural gas as an energy source for households.

Agriculture was responsible for 79.3 per cent of total N2O emissions and energy and transformation for 17.0 per cent.

We inject our own aerosols into the atmosphere, and we have trace gases, and not just carbon dioxide it's methane, ozone, oxides of sulfur and nitrogen.

It's great. Lots of NO is released.

Slovakia provided projections of its energy related emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O in 2005.

Methane held the second largest share (11 per cent) of GHG emissions, followed by N2O (4 per cent).

And we then thought to ourselves, with those big stores, I wonder if sunlight might activate those stores and release them from the skin, where the stores are about 10 times as big as what's in the circulation.

In three Parties, the reductions are expected to result from a measure to limit N2O emissions from adipic acid manufacturing.

With respect to air quality, a number of steps have been taken to reduce emissions, such as introduction of fees on emissions of nitrogen oxides and stricter requirements on emissions from industrial activities.

Moreover, energy use has grown 16 fold during the twentieth century, causing 160 million tons of atmospheric sulfur dioxide emissions per year more than twice the total of natural emissions. Likewise, more nitrogen fertilizer is applied in agriculture than is fixed naturally in all terrestrial ecosystems, and nitric oxide production from the burning of fossil fuels and biomass also surpasses natural emissions.

Slovakia and the United States project N2O emission reductions in 2000 and beyond from measures to boost the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer use.

Agriculture is the largest source of N2O emissions for the majority of reporting Parties, but emissions from transport have been the fastest growing in many of them.
