GIWA focused on environmental aspects of water, comprising surface and ground waters as well as coastal and marine waters.

Foreign fishing vessels have open access to Somali coastal waters.

It also looked at integrated coastal area and river basin management, which links freshwater and coastal and marine systems, highlighting land based sources of activities affecting the quality and uses of the coastal and marine environment.

It runs down the rivers, and it feeds the plankton, the little microscopic plant cells in the coastal water.

The project, based on collaboration with water experts globally, collected data and information in 66 GIWA subregions on the state of international waters, freshwater basins, transboundary rivers, coastal marine waters and large marine ecosystems.

From January through July 2005, incidents of piracy in Somali coastal waters have been fairly common and are listed in annex V.

For example, all the 47 incidents of piracy reported for East Africa by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) from 1998 to June 2004 took place in Somali coastal waters.

As a result, Somali coastal waters are under the control of a number of different local administrations or self appointed militias, led by a faction leader.

The vessel left the port on 2 December and fished the coastal waters between Mogadishu and Kismaayo.

I hasten to add that such measures should include those taken at national and regional levels with regard to waters under national jurisdiction, particularly those belonging to coastal developing countries.

The soil and coastal waters of the island polluted by substances such as lead, depleted uranium and arsenic, whose presence was a serious threat to public health needed urgent decontamination.

This would put vast, often densely populated, coastal areas in all parts of the world in danger of permanent flooding.

So the Gulf is a really important piece of water more important than a similar volume of water in the open Atlantic Ocean.

This estimate does not include the coastal oil trench and coastal oil deposit as contamination in those areas was not caused by invasion related oil spills modelled by OSCAR.

Some Parties have already undertaken measures to protect coastal areas, such as building retention walls and sand injections to counteract soil erosion.

8. Encourages coastal States to develop ocean policies and mechanisms on integrated management, including at the subregional and regional levels, and also including assistance to developing States in accomplishing these objectives

We fundamentally depend on natural ecosystems and resources provided by watersheds and aquifers, coastal and marine ecosystems, mountains, forests, soils and the atmosphere.

These treaties establish the freedom of navigation and fisheries, excluding the 10 mile coastal zone, where fisheries are reserved for the ships of the coastal State.
