That is, we're able to save it from a fate of deep sea bottom trawling.

In the communiqué issued by the Pacific Islands Forum in October this year, Forum leaders noted the call for a moratorium on deep sea bottom trawling and for the creation of a legal framework to manage that method of fishing in order to protect biodiversity in the high seas.

Due to its inability to police its waters, they are regularly overfished by illegal foreign trawlers.

At the same time, decreasing catches forced small scale fishermen to increase the size of their vessels and fish farther from shore.

The varieties landed are tuna, bonito, mackerel, squid, shark, lobster and shrimp.

These treaties establish the freedom of navigation and fisheries, excluding the 10 mile coastal zone, where fisheries are reserved for the ships of the coastal State.

The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service notes that the U.S. West Coast longline, gillnet and other fishing for highly migratory species (such as tuna and swordfish) make up only a small portion of overall fisheries related business in most ports and communities.

19. In its response of 7 July 1998 to the Secretary General, Maldives stated that it was opposed to any form of large scale drift net fishing on the high seas and that any drift net fishing was not allowed by the Fisheries Law of Maldives.

By comparison, it is relatively fuel efficient to target deep sea species such as menhaden and mackerel, most of which are ground up into meal or used for oil for unsustainable fish farms.

As far as FAO is aware, the Mediterranean Sea is the only region in the world where large scale pelagic drift net fishing gear (i.e., nets in excess of 2.5 km) is being deployed.
